Thursday, July 22, 2010 - Looking for Local Journalists

Hi all,

If you are a passionate journalist who writes for your local paper or have experience as a local journalist, you may be interested in becoming an Editor/Writer for  At Patch, you become the editor and writer of your own page for the city you live in and cover news items specifically in that area, much like a local newspaper would.  It is a full-time job and there are many benefits.  This is more than a freelance writing job - it is a full-time job with a lot of responsibility.

Being an Editor at is looking for people who have a degree in journalism and who also have experience.  If you are accepted, some of the benefits are:
  • Full-time salary
  • They supply a laptop, smart phone, camera and police scanner
  • Benefit package as well as a 401k plan
However, you must be willing to work varying hours, have a car of your own, be able to plan a budget, and be able to manage a team of freelance writers.

Right now is hiring people in many states across the U.S.  Here is the link of jobs at Patch.  For more information about what they are looking for, and how to apply, click here.

Even if they are not looking for an Editor in your area and you are willing to relocate, you can apply and be placed in another area.

Patch is owned by AOL and sounds like an interesting opportunity for people who want to start their own online style of newspaper reporting.  If you have the experience and are looking for a full-time job, this may be the right opportunity for you.

Would love to hear from Editors and Writers to see what they think of this opportunity. Please feel free to share.

Happy Writing,

Freelancing for Newspapers: Writing for an Overlooked Market

  1. Wow, this sounds great!! I was really interested, but I don't have a degree in journalism. :( My degree is in the medical field- I have a B.S. in Clinical Laboratory Science. Guess that won't help me at though. You have a terrific blog here. Awesome job!
I have a new Genealogy blog- if anyone is researching the surnames BERRY, ROGERS, RODGERS, JACKSON, BANKSTON, ADAIR and more...

  2. I currently work for Patch as a CLC (I write listings and take photos of local businesses), and absolutely love it. This is an excellent site to write for, and payment has been prompt every week (except once, when it was a day late).

I've been doing freelance writing for them for the last few months, and they do not pay promptly. In fact, I haven't been paid for 2 articles I wrote back in January, and the editor is now blowing me off. I'm finding out as I do research on this, that this is happening to a lot of their freelance writers!
